Hedgerow Surveys

Hedgerows are classed as a Priority Habitat under the UK Biodiversity Action Plan (BAP) and also listed  on many Local BAP.  Hedgerows surveys are used as a means of determining the importance of hedgerows under The Hedgerow Regulations 1997.

Hedgerow surveys will often be requested by Local Planning Authority prior to granting hedgerow removal notices. Removal of hedgerows designated as “important” under the regulations may be restricted. Where the removal of improtant hedgerows cannot be avoided, hedgerow translocation can be implemented.  This is where sections are removed and replanted, either temporarily or premanently.

We are frequently comissioned to undertake hedgerow surveys and works include:-

  • Hedgerow Regulation Surveys of hedgerows located within a 17km piperoute for the Cheshire Brine Energy Project.
  • Hedgerow Regulation Survey of several hedges for a small pipeline scheme for United Utilities Plc.
  • Hedgerow Assessment to assess this Priority Habitat as required by planning for smaller developments for Lancashire County Council.
